CT Scan

CT is short for Computed Tomography and is sometimes referred to as a CAT scan. A CT scan is frequently used to image the body, spine or head. Your healthcare provider may request this kind of test to screen for a variety of conditions, including heart disease, disorders of internal organs, sinus problems or certain types of cancer. The CT scanner takes a series of pictures and assembles them into 3D images that help your doctor to view internal organs and structures.

Preparing for your CT Scan

  • If you are scheduled for a CT Scan with IV contrast, please do not eat after midnight or for 4 hours before your appointment.
  • Drink 3 to 4 cups of water during the period of 4 hours before the scheduled procedure.
  • You may take medication with water. Contact your healthcare provider if you take medication for diabetes.
  • If you are scheduled for a CT of the abdomen/pelvis you will be asked to drink a contrast agent 60 to 90 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
