Fluoroscopy
Fluoroscopy is an X-ray study that is enhanced with the use of a fluorescent material or contrast agent, allowing the radiologist to clearly view organs and tissues as they function in real-time. Fluoroscopy is commonly used to examine the digestive or gastrointestinal (GI) system. This type of exam can also be used during interventional radiology procedures to monitor or guide instruments during treatments.
Preparing for a Fluoroscopy Procedure
Preparation for Upper GI Series:
- Please do not drink or eat after midnight.
- If you take oral medications, you may take them with a small sip of water, be sure to tell the technologist what pills you have taken when you arrive for your test.
Preparation for a Barium Enema:
- Obtain a prescription from your healthcare provider for a prep kit available from your local pharmacist. Please follow the directions for the 18 hour prep.
- It is okay to take oral medications with water.
